It may be due to Lake Iseo’s proximity to the larger lakes of northern Italy that it has remained less known and less visited over the years. Yet this has allowed this small environmental gem to preserve its nature and traditions over time, including beekeeping.
The lake’s mild microclimate creates ideal conditions for this fascinating activity: a lush variety of flora and rich biodiversity, which together form an excellent habitat for bees and for their production of honey and other apicultural products.
It is precisely to enhance and protect these characteristics that the Strada delle Api (Bee Trail) was created in Sulzano: a pleasant naturalistic and educational path that begins near the local schools and climbs, with a bit of effort, along the old mule track toward Nistisino. Along the way, a series of information boards introduce visitors to the world of pollinators and their role in the environment, answering in simple terms questions such as:
- How do bees live?
- Why are they so important?
- What threats do they face today?
As we walk, we don’t just find answers to these questions, we also pass through woods, meadows, small hamlets, and scenic viewpoints that open onto the lake, offering wonderful panoramas.
About 20 minutes before reaching Nistisino, a wonderful educational apiary was created in May 2026. It will soon be entrusted to a local beekeeper and managed in a way that allows visitors to observe the life of the hive up close and in complete safety. It serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting nature and its delicate balance, so that these precious creatures can thrive and offer us their products.
From here, you can continue the climb up to Nistisino for a break with a magnificent view of Monte Isola and the shores of the lake — a reward for the effort of the walk.
At this point, a taste of honey produced nearby is simply a must! And there is plenty to choose from. Many passionate beekeepers, whether as a hobby or a profession, carry on their patient and attentive work, often rooted in traditions cultivated and passed down within their families.
